Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Private Equity Firm.
A major resort island situated on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group for a sum reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment of the Oatley family has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
The Reported Sale
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard approvals from regulators.
The sellers issued a comment saying they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately 30% of the land is built upon, including a substantial range of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and southern states.
Broader Portfolio and Regional Background
The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
