The original stars, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will return for the new Hunger Games series movie, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

News has broken that beloved stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will reprise their iconic roles in the newest chapter of the Hunger Games film series, titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Production is currently underway.

A Significant Comeback for the Franchise

Lawrence and Hutcherson will once again portray Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, respectively. Industry whispers indicate their appearance will take the form of a flash-forward sequence, considering the main film series concluded with their characters living in peace.

This signifies the sixth film in the blockbuster Hunger Games franchise.

The Source Material

Sunrise on the Reaping is based upon a newly published work by author Suzanne Collins. It serves as the follow-up prequel after 2023's The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Returning to the director's chair is Francis Lawrence, who has helmed nearly all the previous films in the series.

The Plot and New Cast

The film's events are set 24 years before the first Hunger Games, centering on a young Haymitch Abernathy. Haymitch, destined to become Katniss's mentor, is portrayed as a tribute in the brutal 50th Hunger Games.

The cast also includes several notable actors in key parts:

  • Jesse Plemons is playing Plutarch Heavensbee.
  • Ralph Fiennes takes on the part of a younger version of the calculating President Snow.

What the Stars Are Doing Now & The Film's Schedule

Separately, Jennifer Lawrence stars in the film Die My Love. Josh Hutcherson is part of the successful franchise Five Nights at Freddy's 2.

Regarding the production schedule:

  1. Principal photography started in the summer of 2025.
  2. Filming was completed in November of the same year.
  3. The eagerly awaited film is targeting a November 2026 theatrical debut.
